Where Timothée Chalamet’s roots are on the map
What is Timothée Chalamet’s ethnicity?
Timothée Chalamet is French and Canadian on his father’s side and Jewish on his mother’s side. His father, Marc Chalamet, was born in France to a French father and a Canadian mother. His mother, Nicole Flender, is half Russian Jewish and half Austrian Jewish.[1][2] Chalamet was born in New York in 1995 and grew up in Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan, in the same apartment building as his grandmother.[2]
Thanks to his father he grew up bilingual and speaks fluent French.[1] When Luca Guadagnino cast him in Call Me by Your Name, the director reshaped the lead role around this side of him and gave the character French lines that do not appear in the novel.[2]

Father’s side
Marc Chalamet worked for UNICEF in New York, where he oversaw the organization’s French publications.[2] His father, Roger Chalamet, was a Protestant pastor in Nîmes and in the villages of the Gard in southern France. When Marc was 15, the family moved to Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, a mountain village in the Haute-Loire, where Roger took over a school that taught French to missionaries before they left for French-speaking Africa. Marc later studied in Lyon, worked as a news agency journalist and met Nicole Flender. The couple settled in New York, where he became a correspondent for Le Parisien.[3]
Roger Chalamet’s wife, Jean Elisabeth, was Canadian.[3] Born Jean Ashworth in Brantford, Ontario, in 1929, she was a graduate of the University of Toronto and married Roger in 1950.[4] They raised five children in the family house in Le Chambon. Timothée spent his childhood summers there with his sister and his cousins, looked after by his grandmother until her death in 2010. For a boy from New York, his father told Paris Match in 2025, the village was another world, and Timothée still goes there to rest when he is in France.[3] His sister, Pauline, lives in Paris and works as an actress.[1]
Mother’s side
Nicole Flender danced on Broadway, and so did her mother. According to GQ, both the urge to perform and the family’s Jewish heritage come down through this line.[2] Nicole’s parents, Harold and Enid Flender, were both born in New York to Jewish immigrant families from Austria, Poland and Russia, Harold in the Bronx in 1924 and Enid in Manhattan in 1927.[5][6][7]
Harold Flender began as a comedy writer for Sid Caesar’s television shows and later turned to drama and film. His television play An Act of Faith, about the rescue of Denmark’s Jews in 1943, won a Christopher Award. He died in 1975 at the age of 50, when Nicole was 17.[5][6] Enid Flender danced and acted professionally and later taught at a public school. She lived most of her life a few apartments away from Nicole in Manhattan Plaza, and Timothée adored her, Moment wrote. She died in 2022 at 95.[5][7] Timothée’s aunt Amy Lippman is a television writer and producer.[1]
After a year at Columbia University, Chalamet left to act full-time and moved to the Bronx, where his family had lived a couple of generations earlier.[2]
In his own words
“I’m tremendously close to my father, he is a role model, one of the most generous people I know. He worked for Unicef. In a showbiz family, he is my rock.”
“I like to think that the need to act and be seen came from my mom’s side, but the ability to listen came from my dad’s side.”
