Who we are
EthnoCeleb (ethnoceleb.com) is responsible for the data described here. You can reach us through the contact form or at info@ethnoceleb.com. This policy applies to every visitor, wherever you live.
Visiting the site
When you open a page, your browser sends technical data such as your IP address and the address of the page. Our host, Cloudflare, needs this to deliver the site and protect it from attacks. We use no analytics and keep no access logs (legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Comments
When you post a comment, we save your name, your comment and the date, plus your email address if you enter one. Your email address is never shown, and we only use it to reach you about your comment, for example if we remove it. To limit how many comments one person can post, we also keep a hash of your IP address for 30 days. The IP address itself is not stored.
Most comments appear right away. Comments with links or certain words wait until we have checked them. Once a comment is published, everyone can read it with your name and the date, and search engines can find it. That includes anything you write about your own family background.
We publish your comment because you ask us to when you post it (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, and Art. 9(2)(e) GDPR for what you share about your own background). Moderation and spam protection rely on our legitimate interest in a friendly comment section (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Messages to us
When you use the contact form, we receive your name, email address, topic, message and the page you came from. Your message is saved in our database and forwarded to our inbox, and here too we keep a hash of your IP address for 30 days. If you email us directly, we receive your email address and your message. We use all of this to answer you and to handle any follow-up (legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Spam protection
Our forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to keep out bots. It loads once you start filling in a form and checks technical signals such as your IP address and browser. Cloudflare also uses these signals to improve Turnstile, as described in its Turnstile privacy addendum (legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Cookies
The site sets no cookies of its own. After you post a comment, your browser remembers your name for the next one (in local storage under “ec-name”). This entry stays on your device and is never sent to us. Cloudflare may set a short-lived security cookie (cf_clearance) when it has to check that you’re not a bot. Both are needed for features you use, so they don’t require consent. You can delete them in your browser at any time.
People in our profiles
Our profiles are about public figures. They cover their ethnic origin and family background, their parents and ancestors, quotes, photos and sources. Ethnic origin is sensitive data under the GDPR. Our main source is what people have said about themselves in public, for example in interviews or their own posts (Art. 9(2)(e) GDPR). We add records and reliable reporting, and every profile lists its sources. We publish this because the background of public figures is a matter of public interest and free expression (Art. 85 and Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Relatives appear by name only when the name is documented. Their addresses, birth dates and other private details stay off the site. If you’re featured and want something corrected or removed, please contact us. We review every request and act on it where your interests outweigh ours.
Who handles your data
Apart from us, your data is handled only by the service providers who host the site and our database and deliver our email. Some of them are based in the US, so data can be processed there. These transfers rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or the EU standard contractual clauses. Our database itself is stored in Europe.
Published comments can be read by everyone. We pass data to authorities only when the law requires it. We never sell your data or share it for advertising.
How long we keep it
Published comments stay online until they are removed, together with any email address you gave. Comments we don’t publish are deleted after 30 days, and so are the IP hashes. Messages to us are deleted after two years at the latest, or sooner if you ask. Deleted data can remain in backups for up to 30 days. The name saved in your browser stays there until you delete it.
Your rights
You can ask us what data we hold about you and get a copy. You can also have it corrected or deleted, limit how we use it, or receive it in a common file format. If you think we’re handling your data wrongly, you can complain to a data protection authority, for example in the country where you live.
To use these rights, write to us through the contact form or at info@ethnoceleb.com. We may ask you to show that a comment or message is yours, for example by writing from the same email address. You’ll hear from us within a month.
Your right to object
Where we rely on our legitimate interest, you can object at any time for reasons arising from your particular situation. We then stop using your data for that purpose, unless we have compelling grounds or need it for legal claims.
Children
The site is meant for a general audience. You must be at least 13 to comment or contact us. If we learn that a child under 13 has sent us personal data, we delete it.
Ads and tracking
There are no ads on the site at the moment. Before we add any, we’ll update this policy and ask for your consent where the law requires it. We don’t track you across other websites, so Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals make no difference here.
Changes
When we change this policy, we update the date at the top. Questions are welcome through the contact form or at info@ethnoceleb.com.
