Where Jenna Ortega’s roots are on the map
What is Jenna Ortega’s ethnicity?
Jenna Ortega is Mexican and Puerto Rican. In a 2016 essay for POPSUGAR she described herself as 75 percent Mexican and 25 percent Puerto Rican.[1] Her father, Edward Ortega, is Mexican American, and her mother, Natalie Ortega, has Mexican and Puerto Rican roots.[2]
She was born in 2002 and grew up in the Coachella Valley in the Southern California desert, the fourth of six children.[3] At 13, while she played the young Jane on Jane the Virgin, she joined a campaign against anti-immigrant rhetoric that encouraged teenagers to be proud of their background.[4] Years later, when she could pick her own projects, she told Elle that she no longer had to settle for “being the sidekick who carries the Puerto Rican flag on her shoulder and makes it her entire personality.”[3]

Father’s side
Edward Ortega is Mexican American.[2] He worked as a sheriff and later moved to a district attorney’s office in California, as his daughter told Elle in 2023.[3]
The family kept up Mexican traditions at home. In her POPSUGAR essay Ortega remembered a piñata at every birthday and tamales at Christmas.[2]
Edward’s father, Tony Ortega, was born in Indio in the Coachella Valley in 1948, the son of Jose Maria and Josephine Ortega. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970, worked as a tile setter and raised his three children on a five-acre ranch. He died in Indio in January 2022, and his obituary in The Desert Sun names Jenna among his grandchildren.[5]
Mother’s side
Natalie Ortega works as an emergency room nurse. When her daughter started acting, she drove her from the desert to auditions in Los Angeles several times a week, a round trip of up to six hours.[3]
The Mexican side of her family goes back to Sinaloa in northwestern Mexico, where Jenna’s great-grandmother grew up on a small ranch.[1]
Jenna’s grandfather on this side was born in Puerto Rico. He moved with his family to the Bronx in New York and later settled in the West, near Natalie’s home in the Southern California desert.[1][6] He died before Jenna was born. She told The Cut in 2025 that her drive to perform may come from him.[6]
In her own words
“My great-grandma on my mother’s side migrated from a small ranch near Sinaloa, Mexico. She came to the United States as an illegal immigrant in hopes to make a better life for her four daughters.”
“Since my father does not speak Spanish, trying to teach my siblings and me the language, when we were little, was a struggle. My mom is bilingual because her grandmother babysat her often and taught her Spanish.”
“My mom has always told us how amazing her dad was and I’m sad we never got to meet him. He was also an entertainer. He was very expressive, and sang and danced, so I feel like I have a bit of him in me.”
