Where Cole Palmer’s roots are on the map
What is Cole Palmer’s ethnicity?
Cole Palmer is English with Caribbean roots on his father’s side. His paternal grandfather, Sterry, was born on the island of St Kitts and came to Manchester as a six-year-old in 1960.[1] Palmer was born in May 2002 and grew up in Wythenshawe, a district in the south of Manchester.[1]
On his boots he wears the flag of St Kitts and Nevis next to the flag of England. He explained the choice in a 2022 essay for The Players’ Tribune as a tribute to his father and his father’s family.[2]

Father’s side
Sterry Palmer was born on December 27, 1953, in Dorset Village, a neighborhood of Basseterre, the capital of St Kitts and Nevis. In 1955 his parents, Estelle Ward and James Palmer, left for England as part of the Windrush generation. Sterry and his older brother St Clair stayed behind and were raised by grandparents, aunts and cousins.[1]
Five years later the two boys followed by boat, first to Barbados and then on to Southampton. Their parents had settled in Moss Side, a part of Manchester where many families from St Kitts and Nevis lived at the time. Sterry grew up close to Manchester City’s old Maine Road ground, played for a youth team in West Manchester and later raised his own family in the city.[1] When BBC Sport visited Dorset Village in December 2024, the house where he was born stood empty and was due to be torn down.[1]
A few outlets call the grandfather Sterry Cole.[3] This profile follows PA Media, which gives his name as Sterry Palmer, and BBC Sport, which names his father James Palmer.[4][1]
Cole’s father, Jermaine, is Sterry’s son. He fixes dental equipment for a living[2] and played Sunday league football in Manchester.[1] When Cole was four or five, his father took him to the park opposite their house in Wythenshawe every day, whatever the weather.[2] In 2024 he travelled to St Kitts to see the house where his father was born.[1]
First visit to St Kitts
Cole Palmer saw the island for the first time in July 2025, a few days after Chelsea won the Club World Cup. He came with members of his family and paid a visit to Prime Minister Terrance Drew, who called him “a descendant of St. Kitts and Nevis”.[5] During the trip he also went to see his grandfather’s old home.[6]
Mother’s side
Far less is public about his mother’s family. The Spectator reports that she works as a dyslexia assessor and describes Palmer as mixed race only through his grandfather from St Kitts.[3] The University Campus of Football Business sums up his background as British and Caribbean.[7] Palmer himself has not spoken about his mother’s ancestry in the interviews we found.
In his own words
“My dad’s family is from St Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean. He hates going out in the cold. But he’d do it for me anyway. That’s why I got the St Kitts flag on my boots, as a little tribute to him and his family.”
“Landing in St Kitts off the back of winning the Club World Cup felt really special. It’s where my grandad’s love for football started.”
